You’ve created an inviting backyard hot tub oasis with a masterfully designed stone patio surrounded by lush and tropical plants, but an unsanitary hot tub is one sure way to keep you indoors. Don’t let cloudy and murky spa water prevent you from indulging in your backyard this summer. And instead, soak up your backyard paradise in clean and clear water, when you follow a few of our guidelines for hot tub maintenance.

Balance the water. Understanding and maintaining your tub’s alkalinity, calcium hardness, and pH level are crucial to keep your hot tub water in a suitable condition. But just because you’re not a chemist, doesn’t mean you can’t make sense of these levels. In fact, in many cases, it’s as simple as testing each level with a test strip and then adjusting your spa supplies to match your tub’s needs.

Add sanitizers. Unfortunately, bacteria, algae, and viruses love your hot tub’s warm water just as much as you do, so it’s important you use sanitizers to help keep the water clean. Chlorine and bromine are the two most popular sanitizers as they fight bacteria. However, these sanitizers do require manual checking to ensure you don’t have too much or too little in your spa water. Simply check the chlorine or bromine levels, and change the amount of sanitizer you add according to the test results.

Don’t forget shock treatments. Shock treatments break down the residue from your sanitizers along with other contaminants from your bathers, which otherwise provide food for bacteria to thrive on. There are several kinds of shock treatments you can use to oxidize the water depending on the kind of sanitizers you’ve chosen. Also, keep in mind it’s a good idea to do a shock treatment after a rain storm, water change, or heavy use like a backyard splash for your friends and family.
